Legends (Steelshod 428)

Hey there!
I don’t post these daily anymore, so just in case you’re a newcomer and you’ve never seen a Steelshod post before… click here to start at the beginning
This is the latest chapter out of several hundred, and I don’t think it will make much sense without context. This isn’t an episodic story so much as one long narrative.
Hopefully, you’ll enjoy yourself, and I’ll see you back here in good time. If not, no big deal. But I think if you start here you’re going to be very, very lost.

Here is a general lore doc including character profiles and here is a basic roster showing who’s where, and who is a PC: Steelshod Roster!
Note for Binge-Readers: This is generally live-updated to reflect the current state of the game! Hopefully if you’re binging you can keep better track of who’s going where, because you just recently read about them going there.
Nahash
Aleksandr and the rest of Steelshod have been in Nahash for a week or so, recruiting and establishing their supply lines for the next leg of their venture.
But now, they’ve received an alarming letter from Brother Enoch, commander of Castle Saraf and the standing army of Knights Serpentes.
He is at Fort Tanniyn, the gateway to Torathia, and he says that an army is approaching out of Al Hassad.
So Aleksandr & Yorrin decide to treat Enoch’s letter with the seriousness it deserves.
They’re a little uncomfortable with Enoch’s decision to cut out the Council—even if just by a few days—but they also understand why
The same way they understood Khashar’s frustrations and dissatisfaction with the Council’s tendency to act slowly and indecisively.
In the end, they do end up notifying one Councilor
Alaina agrees not to say anything until the messenger formally delivers Enoch’s message to the Council.
And she and Aleksandr share a quiet, private goodbye. Far too soon after they were reunited, in truth.
They also inform a few members of Steelshod, and round up a small team to accompany them.
Aleksandr brings in Miles and Sophie to accompany them and provide a strong, deadly presence to loom behind them in any negotiations that might occur.
Yorrin selects Chauncey and Kjelfrid to come along to back him up in case things need to get... underhanded
They also elect to bring along Mucker & Ignus, mainly as a contingency if they find Fort Tanniyn under siege when they arrive.
Aleksandr also pulls out a tiny handful of troops from the greater Coalition
Specifically the Betan knight Sir Jacob Sapwell, and nine Sapwell knights.
The Sapwell “knights” are more hill rangers than traditional knights—fast riders, deadly fighters, and lacking any compunctions. They can likely back up either Aleksandr or Yorrin in their various potential activities.
There is one more member of Steelshod they would really like to bring
But they intend to ride hard for Tanniyn, and they don’t know if he will have the fortitude to keep up.
After all, Brutus Varley may be healthier than he was a few years ago, but he’s still eighty-something years old.
So Aleksandr pulls another contingent of troops out of the Coalition
He hand-selects the young Betan knight and heir, Honor Harrington. She is an accomplished knight and she commands a good amount of troops, troops from the Harrington lands as well as from the rest of Betany.
Aleksandr asks Honor and her troops to escort Varley down the south road to Fort Tanniyn—they’ll arrive later than Aleksandr & Yorrin will, but hopefully only by a few days.
At the last minute, Yorrin also pulls out a small selection of their goblin forces—a couple of Stone-Shapers, backed by some of the former-Thaumati Hunters—to travel with Honor’s column.
The goblins wouldn’t be able to keep up with a small force of mounted men riding hard, but they can keep pace with the slower group easily.
Even with the expanded secondary group, it’s a small force compared to the total Coalition
But that’s fine… Aleksandr and Yorrin are confident they have a flexible team to address a lot of possible problems, and stall for time while the Coalition catches up.
Aleksandr leaves Dylan in command of the remainder of Steelshod in the Coalition force, but Dylan is not left as the over-commander.
For one thing, as we all know, he doesn’t want to be. For another, his arm is still healing and he is, technically, on the sick-list.
Anatoly will remain to assist and command Steelshod in the unlikely event of combat
And Aleksandr leaves Chaya Cohen, heir to Betany, in command of the overall Coalition Army.
Aleksandr also leaves a couple of discreet secondary orders
He wants Chaya to keep Prince James Tiberius of Kirkworth busy while Aleksandr is absent—occupy his time all day with drills and training, don’t let him get into trouble.
Aleksandr has gotten good at these odd Middish turns of phrase, and he tells Chaya to “ride James hard.”
Chaya’s expression flickers briefly into one of distaste before she nods and confirms that she will do so.
Aleksandr also gives Robin a special directive: keep Prince James busy when the day’s work is done. Take him drinking or gambling or whatever else. Keep him safe in the process, but just keep him distracted
Robin is more than happy to promise to keep the princeling out of serious trouble if it means he has official orders to drink and dice every night.
These preparations are all made quickly, and in relative secret
Even so, before they leave Sister Eliana comes to them.
That’s fine, they were thinking they might invite her anyway.
They still don’t fully trust her, but they seek a peace with Khashar and she’s their best ticket to ensuring that they get it.
So they are upfront with her as soon as she approaches them.
Aleksandr tells her that Enoch has written to them, and that there is apparently some trouble coming out of Al Hassad.
She obviously appreciates his honesty and forthrightness.
Eliana seems saddened by the news, but not exactly surprised.
She tells them some stuff they mostly already knew, but from the perspective of someone sympathetic to Khashar’s point of view.
Specifically, she says Khashar’s intelligence had half-expected an inevitable retaliation from Al Hassad.
She gives them a brief explanation of Hassadian politics
Explaining that Al Hassad is much like the Midlands, in that they are a land of disparate kingdoms and nations that often fight each other, but they are united in religion.
The head of that religion is called the Kalif—a Malhaanite religious leader considered to be God’s living prophet.
The Kalif rules his own peoples under the Amirid Kalifate (not unlike Torathia’s position as supreme Middish kingdom and religious center)
But the only time that the other Hassadian kingdoms serve under him is when they are warring on religious grounds against the Torathi
Eliana says they’ve known for a while that the latest Kalif to come to power was a conservative one.
Trade routes with Al Hassad have suffered for the past decade.
It came as bad news, but not wholly unexpected, when word came a few years ago that the Kalif’s forces had wiped out the remaining Cassaline outposts in Al Hassad.
Eliana says that moment was well-timed, however… the Cassaline legions were wiped out right around the time that Khashar was taking control, and that news helped to divert a lot of Cassaline anger away from Torathia.
It’s why Darius (Eliana, they notice, calls Khashar by his first name. Not surprising, really) put together a Torade to assault Al Hassad in retaliation.
That Torade was mostly Torathian volunteers, along with several Cassaline legions that were given the option of Torade as a way to remain in their legions, and not get disbanded.
Eliana says that the reality is that Darius did not truly expect the Torade to be successful. He hoped it might be, but it seemed unlikely.
Their biggest hope was that it would cause enough trouble to deter the Hassadians from pushing into the west for a while.
Perhaps it succeeded. Perhaps not. It’s been maybe two years since then, so not exactly a lot of time was bought, if any.
But now, as they feared, Al Hassad is coming to retaliate
Worse still, it sounds like they may be retaliating, not against Khashar, but against Torathia itself.
Eliana says she would like to go with Aleksandr & Yorrin to see what’s happened. Perhaps she can help in their negotiations.
They agree to take her and a couple of her bodyguards, but they don’t want to draw too much attention to their main group.
So most of her Serpentes escort will follow behind with Honor’s column.
The night before they leave, Varley has a brief meeting with Aleksandr
He says that he’s particularly glad to be going with them.
He explains that he may have some small personal business to attend to at their destination.
Varley says he sent a letter to Agranum when they arrived in Nahash, but he would also love to hurry there as soon as possible.
Agranum, as a reminder, is the capital city of the small kingdom of Scaura—Scaura being a fully Torathi client state that lies along the border between Torathia and the Cassaline Empire.
Just south of Fort Tanniyn, and potentially in the path of this Hassadian army.
Aleksandr asks if Varley is calling on an old friend or if this is related to their work—he doesn’t mind either way, just curious.
Varley says… both.
But it’s been a long time since he’s seen the old friend he’s looking for, and at his age it doesn’t do to assume old friends are still alive.
But the people he’s hoping to contact—one in particular—could be very useful to speak with, if they do indeed still live and can still be found in Agranum.
Varley keeps things vague, and Aleksandr does not pry.
But their discussion segues into a discussion of Al Hassad and what they might expect from a Hassadian army.
Varley admits that Al Hassad is one of the rare places he has never been to. He’s never been on a Torade, never faced a Kalif on the battlefield.
He’s faced a handful of warlords over the years.
And of course he’s spoken with two Hassadian warlords that converted to the Torathi faith… Asaph Artaxerxes of the Nahash Council, and Nasim al Wazir of Khashar’s inner circle.
But Varley says he’s read plenty of accounts of wars between Al Hassad and both Torathia and the Empire
Which means he probably knows more than Aleksandr.
He talks a bit about the culture, about how devout the people are in their faith and obedience to the Kalif in matters of religion
If anything, at least in that capacity Varley says that the Hassadians are more united than the Midlands.
A consequence of the expression of their faith, as contrasted to the Torathi.
Torath says “help yourself, be free” and everyone has their own idea of how to do that.
But Malhaan is… not Torath.
He expects strict obedience, strict compliance with his laws.
And the various Hassadian kingdoms tend to be similarly rigid.
In Al Hassad men are born into castes, and those castes are even more immutable than the serfs and freemen of the Midlands... or perhaps even Rusk.
That rigidity affects their religion and many aspects of their culture, Varley says…
But nevertheless the lands of Al Hassad are extremely sophisticated, in their own ways.
He says that some Hassadian kingdoms have had the secrets of steelsmithing for many generations, jealously guarded.
They have priests, perhaps even sorcerers.
Definitely their own houses of great learning, and alchemists.
Aleksandr recalls that Nasim al Wazir is an alchemist, and the late Pontius Corvus of Cassala seemed to have learned his craft in Al Hassad.
Varley agrees… from what he’s read, the Kalifate has an entire caste of specialized alchemists.
He believes they’ve had something much like Steelshod’s “Thunderbolt” in their arsenal for centuries
The distinction is, as much as Al Hassad has made many discoveries, those discoveries are tightly controlled within the rigid social hierarchies.
Rarely shared. Resulting in a society marked by distinct innovations, but followed by long periods of stagnation.
Of their war capabilities, Varley knows a fair amount as well.
One of the largest Hassadian kingdoms, and the one closest to Cassala, is the nation called Oghuz Diyari.
Formerly a Cassaline province called Ortusia, it was conquered by an eastern people centuries ago.
The Oghuz are known for fielding huge numbers of highly skilled cavalry, both horse archers and heavily armored cataphracts.
They also have old Cassaline-style phalanxes of infantry, though Varley believes their infantry tactics are notoriously simple and not as innovative as modern Cassaline methods.
In terms of large scale tactics, Varley knows the forces of the Kalif are fond of sieges and have castes of engineers capable of making many of the siege weapons that were common in the Empire’s height.
In fact, Varley comments that this might be the best way to think of them… as very much comparable to Torathia and the Empire in terms of manpower, strategy, and technology.
It’s a very enlightening conversation.
Especially considering Varley prefaced it by saying he doesn’t know much about Al Hassad.
Aleksandr only regrets that he will be riding ahead and not able to continually pick Varley’s brain for the next few days of travel.
But he wants to meet Enoch with all haste.
Indeed, the smaller force rides out soon after. Eliana has just two of her “Silver Paladin” Serpentes as escorts, along with Brother Itzhak Coldman.
Sophie sidles up to Itzhak shortly after they get on the road
She smugly asks how his arm is feeling.
Itzhak is a quiet sort, and he ignores her with no more acknowledgement than an icy glare before nudging his horse a little faster.
And then they continue on the southern road.
At one point, the road takes a turn between two steep hills
Yorrin notices a couple of rough-looking men hanging about off the side of the road.
He sees them watching the road, and studying Steelshod’s approach.
As Steelshod grows closer, one of the men whistles, and then they scurry off the road and watch as Aleksandr, Yorrin, and the others pass.
Yorrin instantly realizes, with intense amusement, that these guys are brigands that just judged Steelshod too dangerous to bushwack.
He makes a mental note to have the Coalition force pressgang them into the army when it eventually makes its way south.
The rest of the journey is quiet and uneventful
Soon enough, they arrive at Fort Tanniyn.
Fort Tanniyn is a terrific sight to behold when approaching from the south, but coming from the north as they are it just looks like a typical keep.
Though even at a distance they notice that the fort is heavily staffed.
The gates open before they arrive and they see, indeed, thousands of Serpentes quartered within.
As they dismount, they notice a particular quality about the voices in the air.
Namely, that there’s a lot of Svardic and Svardic-accented Middish being spoken by these Serpentes.
This isn’t really a shock—they’ve been expecting it. But it’s still an unusual experience.
Regardless, they are welcomed into Fort Tanniyn by the defenders.
By the time they’ve dismounted and settled their horses, a familiar old man has approached them.
Brother Enoch, legendary Serpentis and commander of Castle Saraf, looks much as they recall from their last meeting a few years past.
He’s solidly built, weathered, his default expression a disapproving frown.
His frown curls into a short-lived smile when he greets Aleksandr and Yorrin
But he suddenly cuts his greeting short. Under his breath, he mutters “What the fuck?”
It takes only a moment for them to track his gaze and realize that he has frozen upon noticing the presence of Sister Eliana.
He immediately, bluntly, asks her what the hell she’s doing here.
Yorrin, conscious of the many eyes and ears on them, suggests they find somewhere private to talk.
Enoch says that yes, he needs to talk to them—Aleksandr & Yorrin
But he again demands to know why Eliana is here, this time looking to Aleksandr & Yorrin for his answer.
They explain that Eliana has been cooperative… Aleksandr says point blank that they intend to involve Khashar in the Coalition.
Enoch says that they clearly have a lot to talk about.
To start with, he wants to meet just the three of them. Him, Aleksandr, Yorrin.
The rest of them can wait out here.
Around this point, Itzhak Coldman has finished putting his own horse away and he steps up beside Eliana.
They don’t miss that when Enoch notices Itzhak he visibly recoils a little, then shakes his head.
Eliana says Enoch’s name in a soothing voice, and tells him that she has come here to help
Enoch interrupts her, holding a hand up as if warding her back. All he says is “It doesn’t work on me.”
Then storms off towards one of the buildings in the fort.
Aleksandr and Yorrin follow him into a sparse office, just a desk cluttered with maps and other tools of the trade.
Enoch says he’s disappointed in the company they keep.
Aleksandr explains a little about why they crossed paths with Eliana… Taraam, the Kirkish armies, the troubles there and everything.
Enoch asks a few quiet questions… he seems surprised that Aleksandr and Yorrin seem to know Eliana was egging Kirkworth into the war that was abruptly aborted.
He warns them: if it seemed obvious to them that Eliana’s goal was to get Kirkworth to attack Steelshod, then Eliana’s goal there was not that
She had some other goal. Enoch stresses that she always has another goal.
He finally asks Aleksandr point blank if he trusts Eliana
He seems relieved when Aleksandr shrugs and says no, not particularly.
Aleksandr says he only trusts that Eliana has Khashar’s ear, and that makes her a useful ally.
Enoch grimaces.
He says if anything he thinks Aleksandr has understated it.
She doesn’t just have Khashar’s ear… he speaks with her voice.
“She’s dangerous,” Enoch says. “Very dangerous.”
Aleksandr blinks at the assertion. He says that he’ll bear that in mind, but he’s obviously a little nonplussed at how vehement Enoch is being.
Aleksandr blurts out the first thought that pops into his head.
“You’re almost making it sound like she commands the Draconis, or something equally outrageous,” he says.
Enoch just grimaces even more. “Eh,” he says. “That would be our guess, yeah,” he says finally.
Aleksandr just stares in surprise. That… would complicate things.
Enoch explains a little further. When Khashar and his faction turned, most of the Draconis turned with him.
But not all of them.
Gilead, one of Enoch’s former right hand men, in particular.
Enoch considers the man to be, overall, a lying son of a bitch. But it does seem he has remained loyal to Torathia, not Khashar.
And Gilead and Enoch had some long conversations after the Serpentes schism really began solidifying.
So… yeah. Enoch isn’t sure of Eliana’s status. But he’s got some strong guesses.
Aleksandr and Yorrin honestly have no idea what to say to this. It’s crazy, possibly dangerous… but not immediately useful
Instead, they pivot to discuss the big matter at hand.
The Coalition
Unferth.
Enoch is a bit skeptical of the claims
But he acknowledges that there have been a few reports of the chimeras Steelshod is talking about.
So far, they’ve all been dealt with by Serpentes to Enoch’s knowledge.
But Aleksandr stresses that the danger of individual chimera isn’t the big risk
It’s Unferth’s endless reach, the Thaumati words of power he wields so easily, and the possibility that if Unferth were to begin sweeping across the lands—if he took a city, for example—his forces would only grow the more civilians and noncombatants he got his claws on.
Right now, Aleksandr & Yorrin believe him to be beatable
But unchecked, he poses a grave threat.
Enoch gets it.
He understands why the Council seems to want him to dispatch a couple thousand half-trained Svardic Serpentes to join the Coalition.
Yorrin stresses that they want Torathia to hold onto much of their troops, to defend the homeland.
This segues into this new potential drain on Torathia’s fighting men.
Al Hassad.
Yorrin says that, while it may not even be possible with heathen Hassadians, they still have to try to parley.
Every arrow flung at Al Hassad is one they will not have in their quiver against Unferth.
Enoch says that diplomacy would be great, but may not be possible.
He tells them what he knows, much in line with some of what Varley said.
The latest Kalif preaches an isolationist, puritannical doctrine that has resulted in Al Hassad as a whole growing increasingly hostile to infidels.
And Khashar has drawn Al Hassad’s ire with his bullshit Torade
Enoch is convinced Khashar wanted to draw out the Hassadians like this, though he isn’t totally sure why.
Still, yes, diplomacy. Worth trying.
Enoch says the Hassadian army is still on the move, still outside the territory of the Empire or the Torathi faithful border kingdoms
He expects they will reach the edges of Scaura or Saabia some time soon.
If Aleksandr and Yorrin truly want to try a parley, their best bet is to ride out and meet them as soon as possible, before the warring truly begins.
They confirm that they do
Enoch says he will ride out with them.
They can take a small force to initiate a diplomatic meeting right away. The Hassadians may not be receptive to a peace, but the are honorable in the extreme—they will honor a peaceful talk, if they agree to it.
The matter then turns back to Eliana.
Obviously, she might be useful in any negotiations.
But Enoch does not remotely trust her
Thats fine. Aleksandr says that he thinks perhaps a more useful task for her would be to ask her to head south now.
Go back to Khashar and deliver to him Aleksandr’s invitation to the Coalition
Explain that they want peace, and will capitulate to any reasonable demand Khashar has in order to secure his support for the fight against Unferth.
Aleksandr is reasonably confident that Eliana is sincere in her agreement that Unferth must be stopped.
Enoch nods. Not a bad plan. If they’re willing to make concessions to Khashar for his support, he’ll probably support them.
Yorrin instinctively looks over his shoulder—they’re alone in a secure office, of course. The nearest Serpentes guards were Svardic recruits. Not likely to be secret Khashar loyalists.
Yorrin tells Enoch that in all honesty, a small part of him is expecting treachery towards the end of all of this.
If the Coalition achieves its goals, and beats Unferth…
That is the moment Yorrin expects Khashar—or perhaps other “allies”—to take full advantage of the situation.
Enoch seems satisfied to hear Yorrin say that. He judges it a healthy degree of wariness.
He says that it has not escaped his notice that the Hassadian invasion is a retaliation for Khashar’s actions, but the retaliation is falling on Torathia’s head.
Coincidence? Enoch wonders. It would not be a bad thing for Khashar if Al Hassad were to tear through Torathia, kill Enoch, kill the Council of Nahash, and incite the rage and grief of all Torathi across the Midlands.
Giving Khashar a perfect moment to unify the Faith under his leadership as he swoops in to crush the Hassadians.
It’s an ugly picture Enoch paints.
But not an implausible one.
Yorrin reminds Enoch that when all this is done Enoch will no doubt hear stories of Yorrin apologizing to Khashar. Kissing his ring.
Yorrin cares less about how he is perceived than he does about seeing this through properly.
Enoch nods. He understands. He isn’t sure he could do the same in Yorrin’s place. But he understands.
So that settles it then.
They will send Eliana south to entreat with Khashar
She will invite Khashar to come north to meet with them in Scaura.
While Enoch and Steelshod go talk to the Hassadians.
As they wrap up the meeting, Yorrin asks Enoch how the Svardic recruits are getting along.
Enoch says they are doing well. They take to the training well. They are disciplined. They even study fairly well, learning to read and write and such.
The one thing that gives him pause is… their Faith
He’s quick to clarify that he doesn’t mean they still worship Vlar.
Only that… there are so many of them. Self-reinforcing, sharing a culture. And so when they have unique interpretations of Torath, those spread quickly
It’s almost like he is watching as a historic moment happens before his eyes, as a new sect of the Torathi faith is born.
Yorrin is less perturbed by this than you might think.
He has seen much the same in the goblins, for example.
Aleksandr points out that Ruskan Torathism is also quite different.
It might be a natural consequence.
Yorrin also asks how one particular recruit is getting on.
Enoch suggests that they ask Nicham directly, and see for themselves.
He is here, of course. With the troops.
The meeting wraps up after that.
Aleksandr goes to speak with Eliana and suggests their plan to her.
Aleksandr asks that Khashar come to Scaura
If she can convince him to, he could even come in force
To deter the Hassadians and to join the Coalition both.
Eliana can make no promises that Darius will bring an army
As far as she knows Papal Cassala still struggles with Imperial dissidents. Hostile factions seeking to drive out the Torathi.
Darius may not be able to fight Al Hassad with a second army so soon.
But she will deliver the message, yes.
She does see wisdom in Aleksandr’s suggestion.
There’s a few moments of logistical discussion
Yorrin offers his help to Eliana for her journey in many ways… escorts, using his resources to help speed her journey… but she declines them all.
She agrees to set out in the morning after leaving a note for the rest of her Serpentes, coming down a bit slower with the second group (Varley’s escort)
At the last moment, Aleksandr asks if perhaps Itzhak Coldman could stay with them for a little longer.
Specifically, he is thinking about something Varley said… Hassadians have castes for steelsmiths, alchemists, and… sorcerers
Varley knew little about them. But Aleksandr would like it if someone that knows something of sorcery could be with them.
Eliana agrees. She will ask Itzhak to stay, and go with them on their parley.
After that she bids them farewell cordially, thanking them for their ability to see past petty disputes and look to the big picture.
That settled, there’s one last interaction they have.
They see one particular Serpentis that they recognize.
A big man, but less big than he used to be.
Older, and he looks it. Actually, he looks even older than he is.
Weathered and scarred. Hair cut short. He wears simple clothes and carries a Serpentis longsword.
They notice him eyeing them both.
Miles notices him, and double checks with Aleksandr.
Is that really...
Yes, Aleksandr says.
It is.
Brother Nicham.
They don’t approach him.
But eventually he approaches them.
He quietly says their names.
Aleksandr greets him
Asks how he has been.
Nicham seems to consider this. Finally he says just one word. “Quiet.”
“A good quiet?” Yorrin asks.
Nicham considers. “I think so,” he says.
“Some of the monks say that in the quiet they… hear God.” He frowns. “I haven’t noticed that.”
Yorrin shrugs. Says Torath has never spoken to him, but even so he can feel what He wants.
Nicham shrugs. He doesn’t think he’s felt that either. But he acknowledges that perhaps he’s heard enough gods talking to him for one lifetime.
Yorrin says maybe Torath knows that, and is giving him some space.
Nicham nods, and falls silent.
He says that mostly it’s just been training. It’s been strange, though.
He’s been having aches again.
At their confusion he clarifies… he feels pain at the end of a day of training. Persistent pain. Soreness.
It dawns on them what he means. As a berserk, he healed so fast. He was superhumanly strong, healthy, vigorous. He never pulled a muscle.
Aleksandr says his leg has ached for years now. He assumes it always will.
Yorrin agrees. He can rest all day and still go to bed sore.
Nicham nods. He says he thinks it is better, this way.
It was too easy, before. To become… lost.
He doesn’t feel lost anymore.
He doesn’t exactly feel found either, but… still.
Yorrin says that sounds good. A step on the right path, even if he has not yet found where he is supposed to be.
Nicham shrugs. He says he doubts he’ll ever feel that way—feel purpose—again
But that’s alright. The quiet is good. It’s not empty… just still.
“When we’re supposed to pray, I just sort of… sit. No thoughts. It’s good.”
Yorrin agrees. “A cup that’s not empty can’t be filled,” he says.
Nicham frowns at that, but does not respond.
Aleksandr tells a personal anecdote, to relate. When he was a boy, and he went to religious ceremonies with his father.
But when he was maybe fifteen, he started to wonder if the ceremonies really.. meant anything.
He says that his last time at a ceremony he just sort of… knelt. No prayers. No thoughts. He just knelt.
It was the only time he ever found the process calming. Useful.
It was the last time he ever went to such a ceremony.
Nicham seems to appreciate the story. Whatever message Aleksandr’s trying to convey seems to be getting across.
The topic shifts to the reason Nicham and the other recruits were called out two years early.
Yorrin asks if he’s heard of Unferth already.
And Nicham freezes.
They see the wheels turning in his head.
He’s heard some stories of chimeras, and had noticed the similarities the madmen have to bersarks.
But he had not heard the Unferth’s name mentioned.
Nicham grows pale.
He says that he had a dream, some days ago.
A strange dream.
Yorrin asks what it was, but Nicham does not answer.
“Soulless,” he says. “He’s not… he’s not a man any more, is he. If he ever was.”
Yorrin has to agree.
Nicham shares the detailed story of that first time Unferth heard the word of Doom
When the Thaumati visited Taerbjornsen’s war room.
When they offered to bring Doom to Steelshod, and Taerbjornsen welcomed their offer.
It did not pass his notice at the time that when they said the Word, nearly everyone in the war room was beaten down by it.
He says he felt it, but it did not scare him. He knew his own Doom in those days, or so he thought.
Sacapus, too, did not buckle.
But of all the men in the room, only one of them didn’t just not buckle, not cry, but rather he relished it
He says he doesn’t think he’d ever seen Unferth so happy as when he heard that word.
Nicham tells them a little about how they said Unferth had the Alltongue.
He fills in some of the little gaps that the PCs have never worried about, but Aleksandr & Yorrin may have lacked.
It’s unsettling to Nicham to realize that that moment in his war room was the start of all of this.
A pebble that started an avalanche.
Yorrin says this whole thing almost reminds him of Hakon and his prophecy of doom.
Nicham nods. He says Hakon believed the doom would come some years after the comet. Maybe ten. Maybe as few as five.
Perhaps he was right after all. The thought is… strange.
Yorrin says they’ve still never seen hide nor hair of Hakon
That throws Nicham off… he had always assumed they killed Hakon.
When they tell him Hakon escaped, he admits he does not know how to feel about that.
They were friends since they were boys, and yet…
Aleksandr says that wherever Hakon has gone, he’s laid low.
Yorrin chimes in that wherever he is, as bad as he was, Yorrin would bury the hatchet if Hakon would help them fight Unferth.
He tells the story of his detachment, and they explain to Nicham that it seems Unferth can project his will outside his body.
Nicham ponders that. It gets him thinking.
He says that Hakon used to speak sometimes of the remnants of the old world. Of the Thaumati. Hakon believed that not all of them were dead.
And based on what Aleksandr and Yorrin have told him, that seems true.
So… if Unferth and the Thaumati can project their spirits beyond their bodies…
And there are more Thaumati hidden out there…
It stands to reason he could have found more of them.
Yorrin frowns. He hadn’t really thought of that.
Aleksandr sighs. He had thought of it.
But the Thaumati they’ve found so far were immobile. Stagnant. Unferth had to work directly upon them to wake them fully.
So even if there are others out there… even if Unferth has contacted them... he may not have been able to rouse them.
They may be reluctant to reveal themselves, reluctant to incur the attention of all humanity. Or perhaps they are not willing to work with each other.
Either way, Aleksandr remains hopeful.
Nicham tells them what he knows of Hakon and his prophecies, now that they seem potentially helpful.
He says that Hakon always believed that his visions had to do with the Thaumati.
His greatest fear was the return of the Thaumati, and then the return of the cataclysm that annihilated them.
As Nicham recalls these details, he begins rambling about the dreams he and Hakon used to have.
They can see the pain on his face as he talks.
He says that in their youth, they dreamed of solutions that seemed foolish later.
“We dreamed of unifying all nations,” he says. “We dreamed of a great king, beloved by his men. Unstoppable in battle. Educated, wise. That’s why I went to the University. Studied under Sacapus.” He pauses. Looks at Aleksandr.
Then Nicham frowns. “But later, things… changed. His dreams turned darker. He thought our plans were impossible. The only way to unify humanity, he thought, was beneath a boot. The only way to stop the cataclysm was through his sorcery. Paid in blood, and lives. Hundreds, or thousands.”
“By then I was changed too. Gone. And what remained… Taerbjornsen never really believed that vision. Hakon didn’t care. He thought he could follow me. Ride my coattails. And build his empire from the ashes I left behind.”
“Well,” Yorrin says. “I must admit it was one of the greatest armies that has ever been raised.”
“Hm,” Nicham replies slowly. “It sounds like… we’re about to see one greater.”
He glances from Aleksandr to Yorrin. “And… perhaps we’ll have men leading it. Beloved by their men. Unstoppable in battle. Educated in the old Cassaline arts.”
Nicham lets out a breath that’s half a laugh and half a sigh.
“Maybe Hakon was always right,” Nicham says.
“Maybe he just… picked the wrong king, with the wrong wizard at his side.”
The conversation petered out after that. Later, Enoch commented that in three years it was the longest conversation he had ever seen Nicham participate in.
Alright, so that’s the last bit we did with Aleksandr & Yorrin. What a blast it was. Some BIG conversations happened that session. Very satisfying.
Next time we pivoted over to the big team recently sent to Victoria. Agrippa and Felix and Zelde and Cyril and James and more! Should be fun. I’ll write some of that up in a while.
One last thing, I pushed a minor update to the May 2020 version of my Steelshod Guidebook a few days ago. It’s the same link as before, over on Patreon. Mostly some morale stuff, statblocks and notes for regular non-monster animals, and a few random tidbits. Nothing huge, but some stuff several people requested. Hope you enjoy!
See you next time, folks.

Bolt and Keeper: Chapter Eleven (Part Two)

First though, they stopped back at Crimson’s mansion. Keeper had an idea. He was going make like a scavenger (No offense to Bolt) and raid the wicked SkyWing’s treasure chamber. He brought many big sacks and burst into the house.
The mansion was empty. With the death of their leader, the Crimson Gang had effectively disbanded. The only dragon left in the mansion was Crimson’s corpse laying with his severed wing in the parlor. Bolt glanced uneasily at Crimson as they passed him.
“It’s okay, Bolt. He’s not coming back.”
Bolt spoke in a low, pained tone of voice: “I should be happy about that. He killed my family, and so many other helpless humans. But all my path of revenge did was put me in harm’s way, and I almost died. I was so reckless.”
Keeper saw the pieces of Bolt’s armor lying on the ground, along with the light weapon he had used against Crimson. He scooped them up and placed them in one of his bags. He didn’t want these powerful tools of destruction to fall into the wrong hands or talons.
Down the hall from the parlor was the treasure room. There was a thick lock on the door. Keeper took the light weapon out of the sack and tried to hand it to Bolt. He held up his good hand and shook his head. “I won’t be able to hold it without the assistance of the LinkSuit. It’s too heavy.”
Instead Keeper tried to use the Pulsar cannon himself. He had seen how Bolt had used the weapon, and had a solid idea on how to operate it. The hole where the trigger was barely fit his talon, but he managed to fit the tip of his claw into the chamber. He aimed the “small” gun at the lock.
He twitched his talon and the weapon let loose its power on the lock, melting it and causing the door to swing open. A powerful weapon indeed.
Inside the treasure room was a wealth of gold and jewels. He became excited. He would never have to worry about money again! This must have been what those scavengers felt when they broke into the SandWing treasure room! He thought. He looked at Bolt behind him, expecting him to share his excitement. Instead he saw Bolt looking indifferent, and somewhat distant about the treasure.
It was clear Bolt wanted nothing to do with Crimson’s treasure. It seemed that it only served as a reminder of what the SkyWing had put him through. Keeper sighed. He realized that most of this treasure was stolen property. It would be best if it were returned to its rightful owners. He began to bundle the treasure into his sacks.
-------------------------------------------
-Possibility-
As it turned out, word had traveled fast regarding the fall of the Crimson Gang. Many were shocked to learn that a “super-powered scavenger” had destroyed the gang. To most of the residents of Possibility, many had already made the connection that the “Armored Scavvie” was in fact Bolt, given that the human had made quite a scene of going off to rescue Keeper.
The Crimson Gang had terrorized Possibility for years. Demanding payments for their own safety, no dragon here was safe from them. Until now. When Keeper landed with Bolt on his back, laden with treasure sacks pilfered from Crimson’s mansion, the dragons erupted into cheers and applause. The two of them were now considered heroes, and Bolt in particular was now the first scavenger in the dragons’ history to be hailed as such.
Bolt carefully got off of Keeper’s back, and was approached by the elderly SandWing who had shown him Crimson’s location.
“You risked your own life to save a dragon, and not only that, you succeeded, and helped to save our town from tyranny. As strange as it is to be thanking a scavenger, I think we of Possibility can all agree that our gratitude is well-warranted. You will always be welcome here.”
“Thank you,” Bolt said.
Keeper began distributing the treasure among the townspeople while Bolt rested under a palm tree nearby. Some dragonets came over to play with him, but decided not to bother him when they saw his sling and bandages.
When most of the treasure was given away, Keeper found that no one had claimed about one-eighth of it. He decided that he would keep the rest of it. As for now, he had to focus on getting his shop in working order again. He told Bolt to come along and together they walked home, surrounded by thankful dragons.
-Two Months Later-
-Bolt-
It took some work to get Keeper’s business/residence back to its former glory. Unfortunately, with only one working hand, Bolt was unable to rebuild his bed, though he was able to salvage the mattress and sleep on that. Several dragons came to visit them. They were all thankful for saving them from the Crimson Gang.
After this long, Bolt’s arm had healed enough to be removed from its cast. Keeper took Bolt back to the hospital to have it sawed off, and soon Bolt’s arm was free. Thankfully, Keeper could communicate with and understand the doctor more easily now, as Bolt had taught him more of his language during his recovery time.
Aloe gave him some instructions for his continued recovery. “It’ll take about a year for your arm to fully heal, so be careful with it until then. No heavy lifting with that arm.”
“Got it,” Bolt said.
The doctor also removed Bolt’s bandages, and even provided him a new shirt for free. Before he put on the garment, he looked at his back in the mirror and groaned. His back was now even more scarred, raised sections of his flesh completely covering most of his skin on that part of his body. He put on his new shirt, not wanting to look at his wrecked body any longer.
When Bolt walked out of the village with Keeper, they met up with Winter for lunch. As they ate, Winter commented on Bolt’s recovery, fascinated with humans’ ability to bounce back from injuries. When they were finished, Keeper flew with Bolt back home.
That night, Bolt dreamed of the Starchild again. The dream had a sense of urgency to it. He couldn’t wait much longer.
-The Next Day-
Bolt walked up to Keeper. This was it. He was going to leave Keeper and go follow his destiny.
“Keeper… There’s something I need to tell you about myself.”
Keeper crouched down to his level. “Of course, Bolt. What is it?”
Bolt told him everything. The underground research center, his true ancestry, and the fact that he had to go to this “Earth” planet. Keeper was surprised to hear about his lineage, then devastated to learn that Bolt wanted to leave off on his own.
“Bolt… Why? I thought we were close? What happened to helping unite our species?”
“Keeper, I know you really like me, but this is for the best. I don’t belong on this world. My home is on Earth.”
-Keeper-
Keeper closed his eyes and let out a few tears. He had just gotten his friend back… And now he wanted to leave him behind to travel to another world. It’s for the best… He repeated in his head, and then he realized it really was. Bolt would never be safe in Pyrrhia, not as long as dragons ruled it. If he really cared about Bolt… He would have to let him go.
“Let’s go,” Keeper said, “Let’s… Get this over with.”
Bolt’s final flight with Keeper was bittersweet. It was a beautiful day for flying, that was for certain. Bolt opened his WristUnit map and right away, almost as if it was eager he was finally following his father’s plans for him, it gave him directions to the place where the Starchild waited for him. It seemed that the ship was currently underwater, just off the coast of the Mud Kingdom.
Several hours later, they arrived at a large hill, southeast of Outpost Village near the ocean shore. Bolt’s WristUnit was pointing right at it, even though it seemed it was just an ordinary semi-forested hill. Keeper landed on the hill.
Or tried to. His feet sank straight through the ground, and with a surprised roar, Keeper fell through a hole that materialized out of nowhere and crashed into a cave, but thankfully neither Keeper nor Bolt were hurt. Keeper didn’t know this, but the area he had landed on was only a projection, made by the Terrans to hide the cave.
Bolt and Keeper looked up from their crash site, and saw why the cave was hidden. A strange feeling took over them. This place doesn’t belong here, they both thought.
The cave contained several things of interest. In the dim light they could see a slightly rusted metal pedestal, and something huge at the other end of the cave. Bolt’s WristUnit was going crazy; a rotating ring had appeared, hovering, over his wrist, and then they noticed that a backlit ring, though the light was covered in dirt, had activated on the pedestal.
Bolt dismounted Keeper in a trance, and walked up to the pedestal. They could both see that a faint human handprint shape was engraved into it. Bolt held up his hand, with his WristUnit’s ring going nuts now, and he slowly, firmly placed his hand on the pedestal.
Both Bolt’s wrist and the pedestal erupted with light, and suddenly, huge lamps on the ceiling of the cave lit up, illuminating the entire chamber. Now they could see what was at the end of the cave. It was a massive circular door, made out of dense, unyielding metal.
A floating window flickered into place over the pedestal. He couldn’t read the scavenger writing, but Bolt obviously could.
-Bolt-
COMMANDING OFFICER RECOGNIZED
HELLO, [MISSINGIDENT]
These words hovered there for a second, then the screen cleared and began typing out new words.
............................................
AIRLOCK SEAL CONTROLS
CURRENT STATUS: SEALED (SEAL INTEGRITY 99%)
STANDING BY FOR AIRLOCK DOOR ACCESS CODE
>
Bolt looked over the words on the screen. What code? Then the code came to him. The learning machine back in Outpost Village had planted it in his head for this exact moment. The Terrans really do think of everything.
Bolt called up a keyboard, and Bolt began to type in the code. He could tell that Keeper was impressed with the way his hands were moving across the keys, no dragon could make their talons move like that.
> A6 CC 23 β
-CODE ACCEPTED-
A very loud repeating sound pierced the cave. A buzzer alarm, Bolt’s brain told him.
A feminine announcer voice blared over the alarm: "CAUTION: PLEASE KEEP CLEAR. AIRLOCK SEAL IS OPENING."
Following this announcement was the single biggest metallic sound he had ever heard. A huge ring on the outside of the vault door popped out, and with an ear-piercing grinding sound it began to rotate, scraping off huge amounts of rust and letting loose a flurry of sparks. With a gigantic BOOM, the door stopped rotating, then an inner section of the door also began to rotate, this time in the opposite direction. As this was happening, a huge arm-like contraption came down from the ceiling and it latched onto the center of the door, letting loose more sparks as it did so.
Finally, the arm, with what must have been the strength of five hundred or more dragons, pulled on the door, and with a rush of wind from inside the hatch that nearly knocked Bolt over, the door began to pull out from its socket. Several seconds later, it was free, and the door then rolled along a track to the left, and slammed to a stop with a BANG.
Behind the door was total darkness… Until some more spotlights flickered on inside the chamber, and inside, another platform elevator like the one in Outpost Village sparked its way up to the floor.
Bolt and Keeper walked into the chamber, which was big enough to admit a dragon. A gate on the elevator platform opened itself, and Bolt stepped on. Keeper also tried to get on the elevator, and Bolt’s heart skipped when the platform began to shake with a loud grinding sound. The platform was big enough to hold Keeper, but not strong enough.
“Keeper, get off!” Bolt shouted in a panic. The last thing he wanted was for both of them to plummet down a deep hole.
Keeper quickly stepped off the elevator, and Bolt followed.
Bolt stepped up to Keeper and sighed. His destiny could wait a little longer. For now, he wanted to say goodbye to his friend.
-Keeper-
“So… This is it,” Bolt said.
Keeper teared up. “You don’t have to go… You could stay.”
“It’s for my own safety, at least for now. Think about it, Keeper. A whole world populated only by us! I couldn’t imagine a safer place to spend the rest of my childhood. And maybe, when I’m feeling better and I’ve gotten stronger, I’ll come back. It’s not like the Starchild is only good for a one-way trip… I could always come back!” He rubbed the back of his neck with his hand. “Earth may be my species’ home planet, but I was born here. I’ll return someday. I promise.”
Bolt then hugged Keeper, the feeling of his little arms and paws embracing his body is one he’d never forget. Keeper thought of all the adventures they had together. All the times he had to bail the little human out of a sticky situation. Bolt meant the world to Keeper, and he knew that if he really loved him he’d have to let him go… But that didn’t make this parting any less heartbreaking.
“I’m going to miss you, Bolt…” Keeper tearfully told him.
Bolt looked like he was going to tear up himself for a second, but then his eyes had a strange determination to them. He looked trustfully up at his dragon friend… He brought his hand up to his neck, and slowly, deliberately...
He removed his scarf.
Underneath was a round little nose and a clean, furless chin and mouth. Bolt had a very pretty face, leading Keeper to wonder why he always covered it up. Bolt draped his scarf down over his shoulders, and let it rest there.
"Please... Call me Goldie." Bolt placed his hand on Keeper's nose. "You've earned the right to call me by that name."
Keeper sobbed and nuzzled Bolt’s entire body with his snout.
“Don’t cry for me, Keeper…” Bolt told Keeper, “I was born to do this.”
And with that, Bolt stepped away from Keeper onto the elevator, and he pressed a button next to the gate. The gate closed itself, and slowly, the platform began to descend into the ground.
“Try and find Wren!” Bolt called to him, “I’m sure she’d be happy to teach you some more English!”
With those last instructions, Bolt’s golden head disappeared down into the pit leading to his ship.
------------------------------------------------------
-Bolt-
-Starchild Dock-
The light from the spotlights began to fade as he went lower and lower. Soon it was pitch black, and Bolt’s ears popped from the drastic change in pressure. He was going even deeper into the ground than he had gone in Outpost Village, easily more than a mile below ground. Finally, ten minutes later, the elevator jolted to a stop.
Just like before, he couldn’t even see his hand when he waved it in front of his face. And this time, he didn’t have his silver torch, or “flashlight” as he now knew it was called. He had left it with his backpack in the research bunker.
Thankfully, some dim lights came on, and Bolt could now see. A large concrete tunnel spread out into the distance. A dark haze hovered over the environment. His fear of cramped spaces twinged within him. He was all alone, deeper than the bottom of the ocean.
I could always go back up, Bolt reasoned in his head, Sure, it’d be awkward to go back to him after that tearful goodbye, but we’d get over it.
But he had a job to do. He couldn’t turn back now; he had to get to the Starchild and go to Terra. Bolt stepped off the elevator into the tunnel.
Bolt’s WristUnit flashed, then when he looked at it, he noticed that the ring was in some sort of animation where the ring was slowly drawing itself on his wrist, going clockwise as it filled up. It’s loading something, Bolt figured out.
When the ring had finished its circular trip around the surface of his wrist, it beeped and spoke “Local Structure Plan download complete.”
Bolt tapped his wrist, and instantly a strange series of rectangular prisms and cubes formed over his wrist. It took him a few seconds to realize that his WristUnit was projecting a three-dimensional map of the underground complex! Sure enough, a dot appeared at the end of a long tunnel; that was his position. And on the other side of the underground building, which must have been very large… Sat the Starchild, in what seemed to be a colossal cave beneath the seafloor.
Bolt stowed his map and began to walk forward. The overall ambiance of the tunnel set Bolt on edge; this was a place no one had been to for a very long time. He was half-expecting some monster or ghost to jump out at him and end his journey right there.
Bolt walked down the tunnel for five whole minutes, and then finally it opened up into an atrium. Here the lights were somewhat brighter. He could see that the wall in front of him had been painted with some mural. On it was a picture of a big white ship shaped loosely like a bird, hanging in the sky. Bolt realized that this image bore an uncanny resemblance to the vision he had in his dreams these past several weeks. Written in elegant cursive letters above the ship were the words:
TERRAN UNIFIED STAR COMMAND: OPERATION “TREK”
LARGE EXPLORATION VESSEL “STARCHILD”
The mural was surprisingly well-preserved given its age. Bolt’s educated mind told him that it was because the entire underground complex had been totally sealed against the elements for two centuries: it had been airlocked. This complex was meant to serve as the “capital” of the Terran colony on this planet, probably back before the Terrans realized that this planet was already populated by two forms of intelligent life.
Bolt called up his map. This place was clearly a facility where one would quickly get hopelessly lost without guidance. It seemed that there was no straight path to the Starchild itself. He would have to take several corridors to get to the ship.
Bolt decided to open a door to his left. After the lights flickered on inside, he stepped in. A row of glass doors stood on one side of the hall. Unlike the sliding blast doors, these doors pivoted open like a normal door. He delicately pulled one of them open. Inside was what apparently passed as an office or work station among Terran humans. Rows of dusty desks occupied the space.
THUD!!!
Bolt nearly jumped out of his skin. The entire facility shook as if something huge had started moving nearby. Bolt began to shiver with fear… Was something coming to get him??
Thankfully, his knowledge infusion from the outpost facility stepped in to quell his fear: that noise was simply the sound of the facility’s power core and life-support machinery waking up. It was actually a very good thing that happened; if the machines had failed to activate, Bolt would have run out of breathable air within a few minutes. As of now, the Starchild Dock was now back under full operational capacity, and fresh, filtered, conditioned air was being pumped down from ground level on the artificial hill the entrance was in.
With the re-activation of the facility's systems, the lights suddenly became brighter, dispelling the fear-inducing aura the building had previously. In addition, a number of holographic displays appeared over the desks in the office. Bolt became very curious. He had to see what kind of data the computers here had on them.
He randomly selected a computer and approached it. Sitting down in the eco-plastic chair, he pulled up to the desk and looked at the screen. It was currently displaying a login prompt. Bolt tried his luck at pressing his wrist up against the desk, since that seemed to work for most Terran hardware. No such luck, this PC was primitive enough that it used a username-password login method.
Bolt called up the keyboard and entered the name computers usually had for him: [missingname].
Surprisingly, the computer accepted the name. The username box disappeared and was replaced with “Hello, [MissingName]! Please set a password for your account!”
Another set of text boxes appeared, and Bolt decided to try something easy.
[Password]: password
Unfortunately, the box turned red, and the words “Sorry, please choose a more secure password” appeared over it.
Bolt decided to type in his father’s name according to the computer.
[Password]: Darter[MissingLastName]
He repeated the password as he was instructed by the system to confirm it, and soon, his login was successful, and he was dropped at what seemed to be a larger, scaled-up version of the home screen on his WristUnit.
A notification appeared at the top of the screen:
Error: Unable to establish celestial uplink with Terra. Some network features will be unavailable because of this.
“Guess that means I’ll have to wait until I get home to talk to anyone,” Bolt told himself.
Bolt opened the “Apps” tab on the desktop and scrolled through the selection of software available to this screen. One of them instantly caught his eye. He tapped on “Ship’s Log” and a window opened in front of the desktop projection.
On screen were all the log entries available to the captain of the Starchild. There were easily over a hundred individual files, all organized by date, starting with “November 8, 2597.” He opened the first log entry, set on that date.
TUSC Starchild: Captain Frank Terrence’s Log, Wednesday, November 8 2597, 13:34 Unified Terran Time
You know, no one expected me to become a captain, much less the captain of a high-stakes exploration mission to an uncharted planet. Someone up in the brass smiled down at me, nonetheless, and now here I am, captain of a brand-spanking-new exploration behemoth, off to find some aliens. The whole crew of 300 is already aboard, and we’re set to launch from Terra’s surface in less than five hours.
This ship supposedly is super-fast. Rumor has it she can top out at half a lightyear per day, which according to the scientists on this ship is un-freaking-heard of. If our projections are correct, we’ll make it to the destination planet in less than two weeks. We’re talking about one lightyear further than Proxima Centauri in TWO WEEKS!
Anyway, I gotta go prep the ship for launch. See ya later, diary.
Bolt closed the entry. Apparently the Starchild was a big deal on Terra back in the day. He scrolled down to an entry dated two weeks in the future from the last entry.
TUSC Starchild: Captain Frank Terrence's Log: Thursday, November 21, 2597, 06:59 Local Planetary Time
Well, after a bit of a scare with our Flux Drive, we finally made it. We had to stop for a day to fix a space-warp on deck five, and thankfully no one was hurt, but it did set us back a bit. The planet TUSC sent us to is beautiful. Initial scans show a wealth of life and THREE moons! That’s gotta make for some excellent views having those things hanging in the sky at night. I can’t wait to get down there and see the place for myself.
Discovery Team’s telling me that the planet’s a lot like ours. Diverse ecosystems, lots of wildlife. They’re picking up some odd readings with some of the creatures, though. They’re not telling me much, but it seems like this planet’s got a particularly dangerous species living on it.
“Oh, you don’t know the half of it,” Bolt told himself jokingly.
Anyway, we’re going to call the star this planet orbits Devonhart, which would make this planet’s official designation “Devonhart 3.” So yeah, we’re not Terrans anymore, we’re officially residents of the third planet from Devonhart. DT tells us orbital scans will be complete in a couple days, and then we’ll prep the ship’s drop shields and go in-atmo. We’ve got big plans for this planet. BIG plans.
Bolt closed that log entry. There were many more logs below this one. He didn’t want to stick around here forever, he was excited to see the Starchild, so he scrolled to the bottom of the list, and found that this log had been marked URGENT: DISTRESS SIGNAL ENCLOSED.
Uh-oh, Bolt thought, Looks like they had some trouble. Bolt opened the log.
TUSC STARCHILD: EMERGENCY LOG ENTRY AUTO-GENERATED BY SYSTEM (BLACK BOX PROTOCOL) 12/26/2601 21:49 LPT
Interestingly, this log entry included audio. He opened the sound file, and the sounds of panic and destruction came from the PC’s speakers, echoing in the empty room. The man’s voice was punctuated by absolute fear. Human screams could be heard in the background along with what could only have been dragon noises.
"This is a Code Three distress signal... Ship name: TUSC Starchild... Ship callsign... Bolt 3... Ship UVID: 34, 34- triple-zero, ONE!... All Terran vessels in the vicinity are legally obligated to respond... Coordinates are found in the subwave of this frequency..." The man's face shattered into abject terror as a dragon's roar sounded in the background. "PLEASE HURRY!!"
The audio log abruptly cut out. System-generated log entries followed.
//WristUnit Signal Lost//
//Incendiary damage detected to surface-level habitation//
Soon the screen filled up with messages about lost WristUnit signals. Bolt knew what that meant. The original crew of the Starchild was being eaten and/or burned alive. The same thing that had happened to Bolt's friends and family was happening to these poor souls.
//All WristUnit Signals Offline: Mission has been declared "Failure." Setting Starchild into Stasis Mode for retrieval by TUSC retrieval team//
//END LOG//
"But if everyone died that night…” Bolt asked himself, “How did anyone survive to make my ancestors, my father... Me?”
Suddenly, Bolt’s WristUnit flashed. “Proximity-based trigger point reached. Playing message from Darter [MissingLastName].”
Bolt quickly raised his wrist, and a hologram of his dad appeared.
“You made it to the dock. Great job, son. You’re closer than I’ve ever been to escaping this forsaken planet.”
“Forsaken? Wow, dad really hated this place.”
“There’s something I need to tell you before you go. I think it’s right that you know the true history of the village before you take off. That way you will always know where you came from.”
Bolt looked closely at his father’s face. He could see little digitized tears coming off of his eyes, and his face conveyed pride to him. Bolt’s heart swelled. Dad’s proud of me getting this far!
“Sit down, son. This is going to be a long one. Okay. You’ve probably seen the ship’s logs by now, since they were pre-loaded onto your WristUnit.”
“They were!?” Bolt was actually surprised by this.
“What the logs don’t tell you is what happened after the Burning of “Original” Outpost Village. The computer thinks we all died, that the dragons got all of us. Little did it know… We had some young kids in the village, mostly around three years old, who hadn’t been fitted with WristUnits yet. No WristUnits meant that according to the ship’s computer… they didn’t exist. So while everything was shut down, the Starchild, the dock, the research center… These children kept on living. They survived in the dragon shelter and came back up to find the place had been wrecked, and all the adults were gone.”
“Just like what happened to me…” Bolt said sadly to himself.
“But they were strong fellows. They didn’t give in. They rebuilt Outpost Village from the ground up. The place wasn’t touched by dragons for two whole centuries, thanks to their genius camouflage skills! The houses they built still stand to this day!”
Bolt scoffed. “Not anymore.”
“But the downside of it all was… The kids were uneducated at that point. Their mommies and daddies had been gobbled up before they could tell the children where they came from. They didn’t know about the underground research center their parents had built. And so began the two-hundred years of ignorance. They thought that they were bona fide natives to ‘Devonhart 3,’ since we knew at that point the planet had natives that looked almost just like us.”
“So they did find the ‘scavengers,’” Bolt said.
“Anyway, we lived the medieval life for two centuries. Then I came along. I found a key that opened the hatch to the underground bunker below the village, buried beneath the ground while I was playing ‘treasure hunt’ as a kid. You can bet I was just as shocked to find that hatch as you were, Bolt. I went down there and found so much! I spent the entire rest of my childhood researching the technology our ancestors left behind. The only person I eventually told about the place was my partner… Your mother.”
“Mom knew…” Bolt whispered, “That’s why she was telling me to go to the Starchild the night she died...”
“Eventually me and her fell in love, and before we knew it, she was with child. Right away I knew that our child was going to be blessed with the technological wonders of the Terrans. That’s why we decided to name you Bolt. You are named after the Starchild’s callsign, Bolt Three. That ship’s a part of you. You were born to fly it.”
Bolt looked at his father skeptically. If that was literally the only reason his father had him, then maybe he was a little too obsessed with leaving Pyrrhia.
“As soon as your umbilical cord was cut, we rushed your dripping body downstairs to the implant lab where I was conducting my research. I already had a selection of high Terran nanotechnology I had prepped to have inserted into you. The implant tech achieved by the Terrans is phenomenal. These devices are implanted at birth, and they literally grow with their hosts! You, my son, have some impressive functionality built into your body, and frankly, I’m jealous of you.”
Bolt chuckled a little bit at that.
“What this is all building up to, Bolt, is this. You’re destined to take us all home, Bolt. No doubt we’re waiting for you outside that door!”
His hand pointed straight at the glass office door, leading Bolt to wonder just how personalized these messages were. Of course, the message was obviously inaccurate in that no one was waiting outside. He was alone here; everyone in the village he was supposed to “take home” was dead, long ago burned away to ash or digested by a Crimson Gang member.
“Remember, Bolt. We’re all counting on you. I couldn’t be prouder to call you my son. Good luck out there, my boy.” He looked tearfully with joy at him. “Safe travels.”
The message finally ended. Bolt wiped away a tear on his cheek. His father had been dead for eleven years, but he had planned this far ahead that even now he had somewhat relevant messages for him saved away in his wrist.
Bolt was energized by his father’s encouraging words. He stood up and rushed out the door, down the halls, checking his map as he went.
Let’s go to the Starchild.

After a full year of totally forgetting about it, I finally wrote the rest of my Ben Shapiro fanfiction. Here it is. (parts 3-5 are new)

Part 1: Date Me, Coward!
[Originally written in response to this post.]
Ben hid around the corner, his face red, a bouquet of lobsters clutched tightly in his sweaty grip. All 4 feet 6 inches of his body was taut with nerves. Today was the day he was going to ask his crush out. He'd been flirting with her on Twitter the only way he knew how, trying to tear her down with his obnoxious insults and demands for debates. Ben was the only one who knew that by "debate", he meant "date", every time. Yet she had never reacted, never given in to what Ben (and nobody else) saw as Ben's raw, masculine energy. Now Ben was going to send her a signal she couldn't ignore.
Ben mustered all of his courage and stepped around the corner, holding out the bouquet.
"AlexandriaUmmmmmmILikeYouDoYouWantToUmmmmGoOutWithMe?!?!" he said frantically, delivering his practiced speech almost too quickly to be understood. Ben was more nervous than ever before. He felt a trickle of something travel slowly down his leg. Fuck. Is that sweat or pee? God, I hope it's sweat. This is exactly why Charlie Kirk recommends that all the TPUSA staff wear diapers, Ben thought to himself.
Suddenly Ben began to take in the scene in front of him. A man was standing uncomfortably close to Ben's one true love. The man's bowtie was the size of a dinner plate, almost as large as his gaping, shouting mouth. It was Tucker Carlson. "Date me, coward!" the Fox News stud said at a volume that was almost loud enough to break the eardrums of everyone present.
Ben watched Tucker through a red haze of rage. The bouquet dropped, forgotten, to the ground. Before Ben himself knew what was happening, his fist, backed up by all 110 pounds of Ben's body, caught Tucker right in the jaw. Tucker fell to the ground, his face already swelling. "Drat," he said, "you've ruined my trademark slug-in-a-toupee-who-has-somehow-learned-to-hate-Muslims look. I'll be off the air for weeks! Now I have to figure out how I can blame this on Barack HUSEIN Obama..."
"I've been sparring against Charlie," Ben replied, his classic smug-little-brother-who-you-really-want-to-punch look back on his face, "compared to his face yours is an easy target."
"But I'm not the only one who lost here," Tucker said, laughing, "look behind you."
Ben turned and saw, to his shock and indignation, that AOC was nowhere to be found. The libutrd hadn't even taken his bouquet of lobsters. But Ben wasn't ready to give up yet. He spat on Tucker and began to walk away.
"This isn't over," said Tucker.
"You bet it's not," said Ben, breaking into a swift Naruto run.

Part 2: The Conservative Halls of Intelligentsia
“C’mon, just let me say it once. Just once,” Charlie’s slimy voice echoed through the labyrinthine halls of TPUSA HQ.
“For the last time, no,” said Candace, “we’ve talked about this,”
“But ‘the pass’ is the only thing that my daddy’s money can’t buy for me. And you’re my only black friend, so-“
“We are not friends. And for the last time, ‘the pass’ doesn’t exist.”
“Well I say we’re friends. You know what, I’m just gonna say it. Here I go… N-“
Ben opened the door to the office, interrupting Charlie’s proclamation.
“Oh hey Ben,” said Charlie, “happy you could make it to picture day. Anyway Candice, I just made a stinky, so……”
Candice sighed and put down her phone. There was a mostly-finished tweet in progress on the screen: Y’know, Hitler wasn’t that bad of a guy. The only reason anyone doesn’t like him is because he was a socialist. There is no other reason that smart people disagree with Hitl…
“Charlie, you always do this,” said Ben, “as soon as someone doesn’t let you say a racial slur, you ‘make a stinky’ and ask them to clean you up. It’s happened 3 times this week already. That’s just facts and logic, buddy.” But Charlie had already led Candace out into the hallway, a victorious grin on his tiny face.
It had been 2 weeks since Ben’s fight with Tucker. 2 weeks of leveraging the combined oil-billionaire-provided resources of The Daily Wire and Turning Point USA in his attempts to find AOC. It had become hard to concentrate on talking louder and faster than college students and then declaring victory in the “debate”, an activity that usually brought Ben so much joy.
Ben snapped out of his reverie and remembered that as Charlie had said, it was indeed picture day. An intern was setting up a tripod in the corner of the office. “Okay Ben, this tripod doesn’t let us hold the camera low enough to take a picture of you, so you’re gonna need to stand on some of these books,” she said.
Ben stepped up onto a 3-book-high stack of The Right Side of History, his own book. He had bought a dozen copies to give to his friends, but after Charlie, Candace, a few other conservative “intellectuals”, and his parents got copies he couldn’t think of anyone else to give them to. At least here they were being put to good use.
Picture day was one of Ben’s favorite regular TPUSA events. He didn’t have to think, which was hard for him, just look smug, which was his greatest strength. “His ideas” would be added later in red and blue text by a team of interns educated at PragerU, the most prestigious YouTube-based university.
Picture day progressed as usual:
Hold up the sign, point at the sign, smirk, the camera flashes.
Cross arms, smirk, the camera flashes.
Hold up a copy of the Affordable Care Act, light a match, smirk, the camera flashes.
Build an effigy of Hilary Clinton out of copies of the Communist Manifesto, swing an axe, smirk, the camera flashes.
Pick up an American girl doll that looks a little like AOC, hold it close to you, stroke its feet, ignore the confused look of the intern behind the camera, smirk, hold this position until the camera finally flashes. Ask the intern for a copy of that one.
Ben knew that some of these pictures would be deemed too extreme by the interns and would be used more rarely, because unfortunately, most of the interns were still in the process of learning that nothing in this world matters except for smirking more confidently than everyone else and thereby being the smartest person in the room.
Just then a text alert appeared on Ben’s phone. It was from Jordan Peterson. “The Lobster has landed.”
“Which Lobster,” Ben quickly typed back, “I can think of at least 40 people to whom you have assigned the codename ‘Lobster’.”
“Your Lobster. She’s giving a speech on the House floor about the Green New Lobster. But be careful! Lobster is here too, and he brought friends from Lobster News.”
Ben didn’t reply. He was already strapping twin samurai swords to his back as he ran out the door and into a waiting helicopter, which he had rented by the hour so that he would be ready for this moment.
“Don’t worry Jordan,” Ben mumbled softly to himself, “I am well trained in facts, logic, reason… and the blade.”

Part 3: House
A single beam of moonlight shone through a window in the Chamber of the House of Representatives, providing the only illumination in the giant, darkened room. Ben slunk carefully down the central aisle, glancing furtively around at the rows of empty chairs as he approached the rostrum. Tucker Carlson could be anywhere, and so could his one true love.
Suddenly, Ben spotted her. She was standing at the podium in the center of the room, facing away from him. The sight of the giant American flag behind her, bathed in moonlight and, Ben assumed, the scent of her feet, was enough to make the front of his pants seem to shrink by about an inch and a half.
Unable to restrain himself any longer, “the cool kids’ philosopher” threw caution to the wind, sprinting forward and shouting, “Alexandria, hypothetically, if I were to be stealing you away, then it logically follows that you would be mine forever, correct?”
Ben only realized his fatal mistake when the woman turned toward him. He saw, too late, that the garment she was wearing wasn’t a white suit jacket, as he had assumed.
It was a lab coat.
Ben fell to his knees as his wife, who is a doctor, looked down on him with tears in her medically-trained eyes, the eyes of a woman with a medical license, the eyes of a doctor.
“Who is Alexandria, Ben?”, she said, with scalpel-like steel creeping into her sobbing voice, a voice that had been used to speak to patients in her role as a doctor.
“Please, Dr. Shapiro, it’s not what it looks like. I just wanted to debate-“
“I went through a proctology rotation in medical school, where I studied to become a medical doctor, Ben,” she cut him off, “I know what bullshit smells like.” Dr. Shapiro began marching toward a side door, medical school diploma and pile of patient records in hand.
“Wait! Dolittle… Who… Strange… Seuss… Robotnik…”, Ben cycled through all his pet names for his wife, desperately hoping for a response. He finally shouted in total desperation, “Remember how I read you neoliberal philosophy as foreplay. Remember how you love watching me talk really fast in the feminist cringe compilations I show you every morning over breakfast. Remember how when you’re exhausted after a long day at the hospital and just want to lie down, I can always prove to you with facts and logic why it’s actually your turn to put the kids to bed. Do you really want to throw all that away?”
Dr. Shapiro stormed out of the room, and Ben found himself reasoning with a slammed door.
“Benny, Benny, Benny,” said a pompous voice from behind him as he felt cold steel pressed against his neck, “you did a baaaaad thing.”

Part 4: Culture War
Ben Shapiro raised his hands above his head. Alone, defeated, and broken, he turned slowly to face his captor. Tucker Carlson stood there, smirking, his bowtie impeccable, his face almost healed from their previous encounter.
Behind Tucker, spread out amongst the empty seats, stood a rogues’ gallery of FOX News contributors. Dinesh D’Souza, wearing a purple-belted gi over an orange prison uniform, assumed a threatening stance when he saw that Ben was facing him.
“I don’t just use my karate skills to kick my wife in the head, as was revealed during the sentencing for my campaign finance crimes,” said the so-called documentary filmmaker. “I also defend the honor of my friends.”
Sean Hannity was silent for the first time in his life, his meaty hand enveloping a tiny silver pistol. Ben could barely make out the inscription, to my best friend, from Roy Moore, as Sean loaded the gun with menacing slowness.
Bill O’Reilly stood further away, handing envelopes labeled “hush money” to the constant stream of female FOX News employees who were filtering into and out of the room. “I came out of retirement just to kick your ass, Bennyboy,” he proclaimed through gritted teeth.
Finally, Ben saw Jordan Peterson cowering in the back of the room. “I’m sorry Ben,” said the haggard psychology professor, “I had no choice. I need to fund my fight against neoliberalism and Cultural Marxism (which are definitely the same thing and totally not part of Western Civilization), and these gentlemen promised to buy copies of all of my books if I helped them trap you. Listen, there are only so many white 14-year-olds who will think I’m their savior for telling them to make some friends and take a shower once in a while. I need more buyers!”
“Don’t worry Jordan, we’ve all done terrible things to sell our books. Now get out of here. You probably don’t want to see what comes next,” replied Ben.
“No you absolutely don’t,” said Tucker with smug confidence, his pen knife pressing into Ben’s throat, “run along now, lobster man.”
As Jordan scurried away, Tucker turned back toward his rival. “And now, Ben”, the words seemed to ooze out of his lips, “it’s time for you to-“
Just then, Tucker’s eyes widened as he glanced toward a side door, which creaked open behind Ben. “The cool kids’ philosopher” took the momentary opportunity to leap backward, drawing his katanas as he looked back to see the new arrivals. Despite his dire situation, Ben couldn’t help but smile when he saw that a second group of War on Christmas veterans had entered the chamber.
The trio was led by Kaitlin Bennett, holding an AR-15 rigidly over her shoulder as she marched forward to stand at Ben’s right. Next came Dennis Prager, who glanced down longingly at the brown mound that was already forming at Kaitlin’s feet before shaking his head to focus himself and trundling up to Ben’s left. Finally, Charlie Kirk, clad in a TPUSA t-shirt and a fresh diaper, walked confidently into the room.
“If you conservitards hate our friend Ben so much,” Charlie proclaimed, “then why don’t you move to Vuvuzela? Ben wouldn’t be caught dead there.”
There was a moment of total silence as everyone in the room processed just how intellectually devastating this argument was. Then, as if on cue, they all charged into battle.
“For libertarianism, and also the monarchy, for no clear reason!” cried Kaitlin Bennett as she swung her rifle toward Sean Hannity. She barely missed his remarkably square head as he took cover behind a desk and returned fire.
“If every high school principal did this to his students, the world would be a much better place,” Dennis droned as he slowly unbuttoned his shirt and strode toward Bill O’Reilly. Bill, muttering something deeply antisemitic, removed his own shirt and prepared to wrestle with the other radio host.
Ben sidestepped past Charlie, who was struggling to hold his diaper in place under a flurry of D’Souza’s blows, and approached Tucker, katanas outstretched.
“Let’s say you took everything from me, Tucker. Say, hypothetically, you ripped my family from my arms, and my true love from my grasp. If we assume that to be true, then wouldn’t you logically have to pay the price?” Ben intoned, his voice hard and quick.
Tucker only growled as he raised his pen knife.
Suddenly, Ben found himself hurtling toward the wall of the chamber at incredible speed, body slammed from the side by two tons of raging Bill O’Reilly. His view of Dennis on the ground, barely conscious, grew more distant as Shapiro left a Keebler elf-sized hole in wall after wall after wall.
When Ben finally landed, his fall broken by a cow made of butter and a placard reading “Sen. Cruz”, he was lying amid a heap of obliterated desks on the right side of the Senate chamber. Kaitlin Bennett, Dennis Prager, and Charlie Kirk were tossed unceremoniously beside him, all fallen to the Fox News hosts’ Fair and Balanced™©® onslaught. Ben glared toward his foes, who were grinning down at him maliciously as they wiped the blood from their wounds.
“This isn’t the BBC, Benny. You can’t run from getting destroyed this time,” said Tucker. He held out his pasty white hand toward Sean Hannity, who eagerly passed him the pistol. “I’m going to enjoy this.”
Ben stared up at the ceiling of the dimly-lit Senate chamber. The blank expanse seemed to blur and shift as tears welled up in his eyes. Ben was alone, loveless, condemned to be snuffed out in the pursuit of the only person who could ever bring him true happiness. He weeped, not for his imminent death, but for his cold and empty life.
And then, although he did not know why, Ben looked to his right. There they were, beaten bloody in a futile effort to save him, his friends. There was Dennis, his breathing slow and methodical, steadily lighting one last cigar. There was Kaitlin, her dress thoroughly soiled but the seething rage in her eyes untouched, staring daggers at Tucker Carlson. And there was Charlie, his microscopic face forming a wide-eyed, quivering pout as he desperately held back his mortal terror.
In that moment, Ben knew just what to do.
“Wait, Tucker. Please, let me say one last thing.” The words flowed through him in a calm and determined cadence, far from his usual frantic ranting. Tucker seemed to take notice of this uncharacteristic confidence, and his dead aim toward Ben’s chest faltered.
“I am not your enemy, Tucker. We are not your enemies. Your enemies are the sick, the poor, single parents and their children. Those who come to this, the land of opportunity, fleeing poverty and persecution to seek a better life and the American Dream. Those who try to better themselves through education at any age. Those who commit nonviolent crimes and beg for mercy as they are dragged away to die in prison. Those who uphold and maintain our democratic republic. Those who fight to marry who they love and share the truth about who they know themselves to be. Those who demand a more just, more free, and more equitable America. Those who do not look like us, or act like us, and thereby make us deeply, profoundly uncomfortable.”
“These are your enemies, Tucker, These, too, are our enemies. Because in the end, everyone here knows what America is actually about. We all have the same real American job, accepting money from the ultra-wealthy to manufacture consent for the system that keeps them in power. We all work tirelessly, day in and day out, not only to control our bowels but also to own the libs, no matter how many lives it costs in broken systems and endless wars. We all…”
Ben continued speaking, the cheers from his audience growing louder as they all helped each other to their feet. The propagandists shook hands and laughed together, oblivious to the two figures hidden in the shadows of the 3rd-floor gallery.
“Have you seen enough of these shitheads, Representative Ocasio-Cotrez?”, said one quietly to the other.
“Yeah,” whispered the second, “let’s kick their asses, Senator Sanders.”

Part 5: Epilogue
“We interrupt our regularly scheduled catheter advertisement to bring you a FOX Breaking News Update. The D.C. police are reporting that eight unidentified suspects have been arrested and charged with trespassing in the Capitol building. They were found unconscious after trashing both chambers of Congress and beating each other to a pulp overnight.”
“Now I know that the looney lefties over at CNN are going to keep the details about this crime hidden, because I’m certain that anyone who could defile our great nation’s capitol this way is an urban, illegal hombre working for ISIS. But here at FOX News, we’re committed to the truth, no matter how non-PC it is, so-“
“Whoa whoa whoa, wait a minute there. I've just received the names and descriptions of the perpetrators, and… y’know what? It would be immoral to share anything at all about the people who committed these heinous crimes. Here at FOX News, we’re going to do the right thing by withholding all information about the names, faces, employers, and political leanings of the people involved. The media shouldn’t keep rewarding violent people with attention.”
“Um… are you sure? Let me just take a quick look at that list and… oh. OH. Yes, I agree, and I’d also like to add that IF, and I mean IF, these arrests are ACTUALLY attacks on Conservative free speech by the MSM and Hollywood and the Deep State and Obama, then the President should immediately pardon everyone involved.”
“But they’re not, because the perpetrators are lone wolves and it would be wrong to judge a whole group by the actions of the worst people who claim to be part of it. Anyway-”
“But JUST IN CASE it is, I think that-“
“ANYWAY, up next we have a special report from Laura Ingraham: Does the Muslim immigrant socialist Antifa crime wave mean that we should ban leftism from being taught in universities? Stay tuned for more after the break.”
