[2018 Draft] How To Get Dahlin & Svechnikov

Note: Cap stats are rounded averages and pulled from [](
I believe the wings could snag 2 major needs in next years draft and have a quick rebuild. First and foremost, the wings need to snag a high draft pick next year. Most of this comes down to luck with the lottery system, but the worse you are the better your odds of snagging a top 3 get. Secondly, the wings need to dump expensive contracts to make cap room. Contracts like Zetterberg ($6.08 mil through 21-22), Kronwall ($4.75 mil through 18-19), Franzen ($3.95 mil through 19-20), Howard ($5.29 mil through 18-19), & Ericsson ($4.25 mil through 19-20).
I believe the wings could trade their 1st rounder 2017 & Nyquist & Franzen/Ericsson (I'd be fine to throw in some of our 3rd rounders this year or Ottawa's 2nd next year to sweeten the deal) to NJD or ARI for their 1st round pick next year. Both teams are in need of a top-six winger. This would give NJD the first and ninth overall pick in this year's draft or ARI the 7th and 9th picks. This is where it comes down to speculation. Even with Nyquist, I still think NJD/ARI is a bad team and has a good chance to score a lottery pick next year. Oddshark puts NJD, DET, and ARI among the least likely to win the cup [](Source)
This gives the wings 2 fantastic chances in the lottery. With these two picks, and a bit of puck luck, the wings should be able to score a top D-man and a top Fwd. My picks would be Dahlin/Hughes & Levin/Svechnikov. If both Dahlin and Hughes go before the wings picks, they can either take Ryan Merkley, or trade up for Dahlin. I'm not a huge fan of the latter but the option is there.
It's been apparent for years the wings need a number 1 Dman and they need to add a scoring forward. Adding a Dahlin secures our blue line and adding another Svechnikov to the roster (assuming he stay out of the box) helps to put pucks in the net. Back to the cap. There's not a ton the wings can do with the cap. Moving Nyquist & Franzen/Ericsson, they have cap room to sign Tatar, Mantha, & Larkin long-term. When Howard's contract expires, ideally he retires and we can use that money to sign Mrazek long term. I'm not a fan of trading Z or Kronwall. They have put in their time and have earned the right to retire as a wing, especially Z. Looking ahead, when Kronwall's contract comes off the books Dahlin should be ready to come up and join the wings and so should Svechnikov.
Looking ahead to potential line combos 4-5 years out is ridiculous, but someone has to do it right? Maybe I should do one of those famous reddit "I'll eat my shoe" bets. But we are looking at potential lines of:
Tatar - Larkin - Mantha
Abby/Z - Nielson - E. Svech
Sheahan/Smith - AA - A. Svech
Glendening/Bertuzzi - Helm/Holmstrom - Frk/Smith
DeKeyser - Dahlin
Russo - Jensen
Sproul - Cholowski/Hronek
It's not perfect, but there's tremendous potential there. This all hinges on a gamble, it comes down to the lottery. If the wings miss their shot in the draft, then the team will need a full rebuild anyways right? Why not take a shot now while we can?
All thoughts and opinions are appreciated!
